On Our Way

June 21

We left at 6 am headed to Mammoth Cave National Park, KY, our first destination. Our drive took us west through VA, WV, and into KY. The scenery was mostly lush, green pasture, densely forested hills, and awesome river gorges. We didn’t see much of note except all the industrial facilities starting east of Charleston, WV and stretching to Lexington, KY. They looked like they might be processing plants for the coal or petrochemical industries. Pipes and vents and storage containers covered huge expanses. The contrast was especially stark and sad where these ugly, gray, metal plants were situated within the beautiful area near the New River Gorge. Near Lexington, KY we saw the quintessential horse farms with their huge, white-fenced paddocks, and fancy barns. Unfortunately, the camera came to mind a bit too late.
